animal-kingdomEllen Barkin hasn’t been particularly well used since her early films, but now she may have found a role well suited for her in the new series “Animal Kingdom” (TNT, 9 p.m.) — a kind of crime family matriarch who takes in a grandson (Finn Cole) when his mother dies of a drug overdose. His uncles, played by Shawn Hatosy, Scott Speedman, Ben Robson and Jake Weary, are not exactly the best best role models, but the kid has to prove himself nonetheless in the remake of the 2010 Australian film that’s part of a striking remake of the cable network.

Another new series created from an old film is not as successful. “Uncle Buck” (ABC, 8 p.m.) transfers the 1989 John Hughes comedy from the suburbs with Mike Epps as the streetwise hustler who agrees to take care of his niece and nephew, where they predictably learn life lessons from his bad choices. James Lesure and Nia Long also star.

Yet another new series, “Wrecked” (TBS, 10 p.m.) is a broad comedy takeoff on the idea of a plateful of characters stuck on a desert island after a crash, informed more by “Lost” than “Gilligan’s Island” with a lot of crude jokes. A crowd of unknowns, led by Brian Sacca, stars.

A game show whose title, at least, is welcome in the political season is “To Tell the Truth” (ABC, 8 p.m.) a revival of the old game show in which a panel, composed of Betty White, NeNe Leakes, Jalen Rose, and in the first of two episodes, Tracee Ellis Ross, try to guess which of a trio of people is the one telling the truth about who they are. Anthony Anderson hosts. A second episode, at 10 p.m., comes in the show’s regular time slot, where Iliza Schlesinger joins the guest seat. One thing different from past runs of “To Tell the Truth” — these episodes are an hour each.

The second episode of Ezra Edelman’s “O.J.: Made in America” (ESPN, 9 p.m.) continues to follow the life of the football star, as he moves into the white suburbs amid the unrest of black neighborhoods in the early 90s. The first episode is repeated at 7 p.m.

John Cena, Kevin Hart, Nick Jonas, Eva Longoria and Ben Stiller are all slated to appear on a new “Maya & Marty” (NBC, 10 p.m.).

The new “I Am Homicide” (Investigation Discovery, 10 p.m.) follows the work of Garry McFadden, a homicide detective in Charlotte, N.C.

Trying to rekindle the old “Surreal Life,” the new “Famously Single” gathers various C-level celebs to live in a house and discuss their relationship issues. But the cast, that includes Aubrey O’Day, Pauly D, Brandi Glanville and Jessica White, is the most toxic you may find on a reality show. You may be better off with “Celebrity Wife Swap” (Lifetime, 8 and 9 p.m.) with Vern Troyer trading with Hines Ward followed by Cloris Leachman swapping with Pia Zadora.

Auditions continue on “America’s Got Talent” (NBC, 8 p.m.).

Probably not a good idea to have two part episodes of “Hotel Hell” (Fox, 8 p.m.).

On “Genealogy Roadshow” (PBS, 8 p.m., check local listings) a woman has ties to the Salem Witch Trials.

Emotional poaching begins on “Coupled” (Fox, 9 p.m.).

A cure is close on “Containment” (The CW, 9 p.m.).

It would have been more timely a week ago, but it’s still scheduled: “The Stanford Rape Case Town Hall” (CNN, 9 p.m.).

Sig grinds through a haul on “Deadliest Catch” (Discovery, 9 p.m.).

Tony Hawk joins the panel on “Chopped Junior” (Food Network, 8 p.m.).

Taylor wants David to drop his church on “Arranged” (FYI, 9 p.m.). There are more religious differences on “Virtually in Love” (Oxygen, 9 p.m.).

“Bert the Conqueror” (Travel, 8 p.m.) visits a backyard amusement park in Michigan.

Candice Bergen is guest programmer tonight on Turner Classic Movies. Her choices: “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre” (8 p.m.), “The Graduate” (10:15 p.m.), “The Earrings of Madame De…” (12:15 a.m.) and “The French Connection” (2:15). Later comes “The Last Detail” (4:15 a.m.).

Baseball today includes Philadelphia at Toronto (MLB, 12:30 p.m.) and Pittsburgh at Mets (MLB, 7 p.m.).

In the Copa America Centenary, it’s Chile vs. Panama (Fox Sports 1, 8 p.m.) and Argentina vs. Bolivia (Fox Sports 1, 10 p.m.). In the European championship, it’s Austraia vs. Hungary (ESPN, noon) and Portugal vs. Iceland (ESPN, 3 p.m.).

WNBA action has Indiana at Minnesota (ESPN2, 8 p.m.).
