Friday TV: Citizen Fincher’s Latest, ‘Mank’

The latest film gift via streaming is David Fincher’s “Mank” (Netflix, streaming), a film about Herman J. Mankiewicz’s struggle to create one of the greatest screenplays, “Citizen Kane” (HBO Max, streaming). Using a script from his late father, Jack Fincher, the stylish black and white film stars Gary Oldman in the title role, Amanda Seyfried, Tom Burke, Lily Colllins and Charles Dance.

Remember when Fridays were as barren as Saturdays for new content? Now, it’s bursting, thanks mostly to streaming, where there are also premieres tonight for a number of series.

“Selena: The Series” (Netflix, streaming) stars Christian Serratos of “The Walking Dead” as the popular Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. Tracking her rise to fame, its languid pace suggests it will be seasons later before she faces her murder at the age of 23.

The latest series based on “The Hardy Boys” (Hulu, streaming) stars Rohan Campbell and Alexander Elliott as the boy detectives who move from the city to a small town.

Jillian Bell from “Brittany Runs a Marathon” stars as a fairy godmother in training who revisits a girl who once wrote for help but is now a grown up single (Isla Fisher) in the new movie “Godmothered” (Disney +, streaming).

The nocturnal lives of animals are the focus of the new nature series “Earth at Night in Color” (Apple TV+, streaming), narrated by Tom Hiddleston.

Cashing in on her perennial holiday hit, here’s “Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special” (Apple TV+, streaming), with appearances from Ariana Grande, Tiffany Haddish, Jennifer Hudson, billy Eichner and Misty Copeland, among others.
