The put-together rap group Lyric 145 and singer Jannel farcia were victims of the double elimination Thursday on “The X Factor.”
Lyric 145, who started out so strong, ended up doing an awful version of the “Mary Poppins” song “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” that was nowhere as good as, say, Jay-Z’s version of “It’s a Hard Knock Life.” This week they continued the pop turn with a mash-up of Queen’s “We Will Rock You” and Katy Perry’s “E.T.,” because it’s apparently a law that somebody has to do Katy Perry each week.
They were eliminated by the viewers. Simon Cowell is down to two groups in his category
The next elimination was more interesting. After the lowest vote getters were announced — Jennel Garcia and Paige Thomas – the two singers, both from Demi Lovato’s category of young adults, had a sing-off with the judges determining who would stay and who would go.
Paige Thomas, who sang Donna Summer’s “Last Dance” Wednesday, opted for Simple Plan’s “Holding On.”
Jannel Garcia, who sang Tina Turner’s version of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary” on Wednesday, sang a version of Hoobastank’s “The Reason.”
Judges voted 3-1 to get Jannel go, with Lovato being the only one who chose to send Paige home.
Now Paige remains, but with the uneasy knowledge that her old mentor wanted to get rid of her.
Once more the full ranking of the remaining Top 10 were announced and once more the lunky country singer Tate Stevens was top of the pack. He was followed, in order, by Carly Rose, Vino Allan, Emblem3, CeCe Frey, Fifth Harmony, Diamond White, Beatrice Miller and Arin Ray.
Two things remain clear: America’s got terrible taste, and the longer they rank every act the less surprising the ultimate winner will be – if anybody’s watching by then.
Another odd thing after the result — Britney Spears, who would seem to have been the weakest judge, has the strongest team, with none of her teen acts eliminated. At four, it’s twice as many as any of the other judges.
