ABC pulled the plug on two series Friday — the ambitious rogue sub saga “Last Resort” and the scary series “666 Park Avenue,” while NBC canceled the dim comedy “Partners.”
“Last Resort,” pictured right, was picked by many critics (including this one) as one of the few network series worth checking out this season.
It had a good pedigree, from “The Shield” creator Shawn Ryan. But it strugled in its time slot Thursdays at 8 p.m., opposite “The Big Bang Theory,” “30 Rock,” “THe X Factor” and “The Vampire Diaries.”
“Last Resort” only attracted 5.8 million viewers for its most recent episode Thursday.
Without the order for the additional nine episodes that would complete its run, “Last Resort” will now end at the end of its initial 13 episodes, with not enough time, we’re guessing, to wrap up all the threads of the mystery by then.
When it comes to the Sunday night “666 Park Avenue,” which featured Terry O’Quinn and Vanessa Williams, maybe nobody cared about its central mystery. It will end after its 13th episode as well after averaging only about 5 million viewers per show.
Two other new fall shows on ABC got full-season pickups earlier in the week, “Nashville” and the sitcom “The Neighbors.”
On CBS, “The Partners,” the Monday night comedy which had the name and premise of an equally unsuccessful comedy a decade ago, lost the battle of the network sitcoms with gay main characters. The show with Michael Urie and David Krumholtz, which has been averaging about 5.5 million viewers, will end its run with its 13th episode as well.
