“Survivor: Caramoan – Fans vs. Favorites” (CBS, 8 p.m.) is the second time they’ve combined returning players with a team of newcomers.
Of the “favorites,” some may be hard to pick out (there’s no Rupert for one thing; no Boston Rob). But there is the gleefully touched Phillip, the nerdy Cochran, and Malcolm from just last season, who got close to winning, but did not.
It’s disheartening that reality producers have lost confidence in finding fresh stars, insisting on bringing on old faces in every new cast. But it’s so great to have the show back in any form, and Jeff Probst off his daytime talk show couch and back in the wild where he belongs.
“Southland” (TNT, 10 p.m.), one of the more successful network-to-cable transplants, returns for its fifth season with a new addition to the squad, played by Chad Michael Murray.
Valentine’s Day on “Modern Family” (ABC, 9 p.m.) means a return of the Claire and Phil’s alter-egos Clive and Juliana. It means a web search on “Workaholics” (Comedy Central, 10 p.m.).
The rite of wolves hunting bison is captured on “Nature” (PBS, 8 p.m., check local listings) from Canada’s Wood Buffalo National Park.
“Nova” (PBS, 9 p.m., check local listings) shows how much about the Earth has been learned from satellites in space.
After sorting through the guys in Hollywood Week on “American Idol” (Fox, 8 p.m.), attention moves to the women.
Gun control has certainly been implemented on the Discovery Channel. Instead of two planned episodes of “Sons of Guns” followed by “Ted Nugent’s Gun Country” there is another night full of reruns of “Moonshiners” (Discovery, 8, 9, 10, 11 p.m.).
Ratings tumbled for “The Americans” (FX, 10 p.m.) in episode two; wonder how it will do for tonight’s third episode.
On the “winter finale” of “Hot in Cleveland” (TV Land, 10 p.m.), Melanie can’t find her toothbrush. Maybe they do need a break.
Hugh Jackman goes “Inside the Actors Studio” (Bravo, 8 p.m.).
One woman likes eating cat hair and another is addicted to coffee enemas on the season premiere of “My Strange Addiction” (TLC, 10 p.m.).
Hard to believe “Guys with Kids” (NBC, 8:30 p.m.) is still on the air.
“Arrow” (The CW, 8 p.m.), renewed for a second season, flashes back to the halcyon days on the island.
“Kroll Show” (Comedy Central, 10:30 p.m.) returns with a new episode.
Rayna goes drinking on a new “Nashville” (ABC, 10 p.m.).
The three-day survey of Oscar winners and nominees from RKO Radio Pictures winds up with “I Remember Mama” (TCM, 8 p.m.), “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” (TCM, 10:30 p.m.), “The Narrow Margin” (TCM, 12:30 a.m.), “The Brave One” (TCM, 2 a.m.), “Susan Slept Here” (TCM, 3:45 a.m.) and “The Big Sky” (TCM, 5:30 a.m.).
Big rivalry: North Carolina at Duke (ESPN, 9 p.m.). Also on in men’s college hoops: Syracuse at Connecticut (ESPN, 7 p.m.), Miami at Florida State (ESPN2, 7 p.m.), Oklahoma State at Texas Tech (ESPNU, 7 p.m.), Central Florida at Memphis (CBS Sports, 8 p.m.), West Virginia at Baylor (ESPN2, 9 p.m.), Providence at South Florida (ESPNU, 9 p.m.), San Diego State at Colorado State (CBS Sports, 10 p.m.), Oregon at Washington (ESPN2, 11 p.m.) and Cal State Fullerton at Long Beach State (ESPNU, 11 p.m.).
