Leave it to Jimmy Fallon to produce a nicely done musical bit commenting on the rumors swirling about the “Tonight” show, by adapting the song “Tonight, Tonight” from “West Side Story” sung in a duet with Jay Leno.

It may not be side-splitting humor, but it’s a warm reminder of the respect between the two late night hosts so often depicted as rivals for the 11:35 p.m. spot. And give some credit for Leno for again good naturedly taking part in a bit for comedy’s sake. And it served as an especially good bridge between the two shows when it debuted late Monday night.

It’s not the first time Leno has agreed to take part in a comedy bit meant to diffuse a situation in which he was central. He flew to New York to do a brief and memorable Super Bowl spot in 2010 as well.
