Andie McDowell plays a small town judge who navigates middle age romance in “Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove” (Hallmark, 8 p.m.). Though it has the bland familiarity of any other Hallmark movie, this two hour tale is the premiere of what will be a new series.
So get used to seeing the same colorful town characters who all know one another, the new newspaperman who holds his own secret (no, he’s not Ed Snowden), and McDowell’s daughter (Sarah Smyth) who has to choose between a rich guy and an old boyfriend who drifted into town. That means it will get soapier than these shows usually get. But it will likely become popular, not only because it’s based on best-sellers, but because there’s hardly anything else on TV.
One new movie on tonight, though, is “The Toyman Killer” (Lifetime, 10 p.m.) about a death row inmate with multiple personalities, with Sarah Carter and Magda Apanowicz.
On broadcast TV, for example, it’s all reruns or burn off episodes of cancelled shows like “Zero Hour” ABC, 8 p.m.) and “Do No Harm” (NBC, 10 p.m.). There is also a movie starring The Rock, “The Game Plan” (ABC, 9 p.m.).
Buck Dharma of Blue Oyster Cult is guest on the season finale of “That Metal Show” (VH1 Classic, midnight).
There’s a new ghost in the house on “Being Human” (BBC America, 10 p.m.).
Last year’s fourth variation of the franchise, “The Bourne Legacy” (HBO, 8 p.m.), with Jeremy Renner in the Matt Damon role, makes its premium cable debut. Also new tonight are Lizzy Caplan and Alison Brie in “Save the Date” (Showtime,8 p.m.); Kevin James in “Here Comes the Boom” (Starz, 9 p.m.), the feel-good mixed martial arts movie, and Ridley Scott’s space saga “Prometheus” (Cinemax, 10 p.m.) with Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron.
Kym Whitley, star of another OWN show, pops up on the standup showcase “Wanda Sykes Presents Herlarious” (OWN, 10 p.m.) amid sets by Carmen Lynch, Marina Franklin and Tracey Ashley.
The first season of the odd new reality show “Pregnant & Dating” (WE, 9 p.m.) comes to an end. But not with a birth or anything.
It may be slightly too early for U.S. football, but here’s some Canadian football: Montreal at Calgary (ESPN2, 7 p.m.).
“Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” (Fox Movie Channel, 8 and 10 p.m.) twice.
Wondering what “Burlesque” (ABC Family, 8 p.m.) is doing on ABC Family.
Jay Thomas doesn’t just throw footballs at meatballs on Christmas episodes of Letterman. He’s also on “The Haunting of…” (Bio, 10 p.m.). Likewise, Tom Green on “Celebrity Ghost Stories” (Bio, 8 p.m.).
Charles Boyer gets the spotlight tonight on Turner Classic Movies with “Gaslight” (8 p.m.), “History is Made at Night” (10 p.m.), “Une Parisienne” (midnight). Later, “The Thing That Couldn’t Die” (TCM, 2 a.m.) is followed by “The Brain that Wouldn’t Die” (TCM, 3:15 a.m.). Probably so they can keep each other company through eternity.
Tim McGraw plays a rerun of “Austin City Limits” (PBS, 9 p.m., check local listings).
You’ve got to admire the schedulers of “Saturday Night Live” (NBC, 11:30 p.m.) who always place a rerun when a host’s new movie is opening. Tonight, the one hosted by former cast member Kristen Wiig. Vampire Weekend is musical guest.
