It gets asked just about every season: Do women have a chance on “American Idol”?
Voters seem anxious to vote them off quickly, and soon after the Top 13 were named this season, two women were voted off, the latest being Emily Piriz, the 18-year-old from Orlando who had tried to sing a Jennifer Lopez song, “Let’s Get Loud” that had the unintended consequence of “let’s get lowest vote totals.”
It followed last week’s ouster of Kristen O’Connor and gives the men a 6-5 edge. More telling, though, is that males have yet to land in the bottom three this season, while five different female names have been there. (other than MK Nobilette, who repeated in the bottom three, Jena Irene an Emily Piriz were new to the bottom; last week’s bottom three had Malaya Watson and the outgoing O’Connor).
Of the remaining women, only Jessica Meuse and Majesty Rose have escaped the bottom three. But considering the way things are going, I’m not so sure how long they will remain so.
And it’s not that the guys are so great. None are barn burners; one is a teen idol already whose performances are getting embarrassing.
The judging panel bemoans who land in the bottom three; still, none have the authority to sort of direct home viewers with how to cast their votes, the way Simon Cowell once did. And voting is a completely messed up process, allowing only one vote per method and there are about five different methods, one of which allows you to cast 50 votes at a time. Chicago never had it so good.
