the-sure-thingThe latest edition of the “AFI Master Class: The Art of Collaboration” (TCM, 8 and 11 p.m.) features the work of director Rob Reiner and his longtime film editor Robert Leighton talking about their process.

It is accompanied with an example of their work together, the 1985 comedy “The Sure Thing” (TCM, 9 p.m.), pictured above, with Daphne Zuniga and John Cusack. Here’s an interview I did with Reiner for the Washington Post several months back

Mom takes Haley out to the bar to mark her turning 21 on “Modern Family” (ABC, 9 p.m.), though the actress who plays her, Sarah Hyland, passed that mark three years ago.

Bill Cosby makes an appearance in the holiday special season finale of “South Park” (Comedy Central, 10 p.m.) with an irresistible title needling the Washington NFL team’s name.

Rayna and Luke plan their wedding day on “Nashville” (ABC, 10 p.m.) and it is not without its bumps.

The spy yarn “The Game” (BBC America, 10 p.m.) reaches its conclusion.

Two consecutive episodes of “Hell’s Kitchen” (Fox, 8 and 9 p.m.) will cut the competitors to four.

Crazy stuff continues to happen on “American Horror Story: Freak Show” (FX, 10 p.m.), as the title would suggest.

But it’s no crazier than Philadelphia’s Mutter Museum, where Mike Rowe visits on a new “Somebody’s Gotta Do It” (CNN, 9 p.m.).

Paul Sorvino plays the visiting grandfather on a New Year’s Eve-themed “The Goldbergs” (ABC, 8:30 p.m.).

Dre wants to be the office’s first black Santa on “Black-ish” (ABC, 9:30 p.m.). “Melissa & Joey” (ABC Family, 8 p.m.) squabble about ornament placement on their first tree. There’s another “It’s a Wonderful Life” variation on “Baby Daddy” (ABC Family, 8:30 p.m.).

Time again for this: “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (ABC Family, 9 p.m.), marking its 25th anniversary. Other holiday fare includes “This Christmas” (BET, 8 p.m.), “The Santa Clause 2” (AMC, 8 and 10:30 p.m.), which seems to be on all week, “A Very Merry Mix-Up” (Hallmark, 8 p.m.), “A Christmas Proposal” (Lifetime, 10 p.m.)  and “One Christmas Eve” (Hallmark, 10 p.m.).

Other movies on tonight include “The Silence of the Lambs” (BBC America, 8 p.m.), “Happy Feet” (Disney, 8 p.m.) and “Prometheus” (FX, 7:30 p.m.).

College hoops tonight include Kansas at Georgetown (Fox Sports 1, 7 p.m.), Columbia at Kentucky (ESPN2, 7 p.m.), High Point at Ohio State (ESPNU, 7 p.m.), Wisconsin at Wisconsin-Milwaukee (ESPN2, 9 p.m.), Utah at BYU (ESPNU, 9 p.m.) and Washington State at Gonzaga (ESPNU, 11 p.m.).

NBA action includes New Orleans at Dallas (ESPN, 8 p.m.) and Miami at Denver (ESPN, 10:30 p.m.).

Hockey has Toronto at Detroit (NBC Sports Network, 8 p.m.).
