Here’s another new show from Netflix — they’re starring to get as big a roster as any network. “Sense8” (Netflix, streaming) is a science fiction series from the Wachowskis of “Matrix” fame. It follows the stories of eight characters in eight different cities who find themselves suddenly connected, with the ability to share knowledge, skills and emotions — and freely fly to the others’ locations without benefit of plane.
The international and quite good looking cast includes Brian J. Smith, Tuppence Middleton, Jamie Clayton, Miguel Angel Silvestre, Tina Desai, Doona Bae, Aml Ameen and Max Riemelt. But “Splash” to “Lost” are represented, too, by Daryl Hannah and Naveen Andrews, respectively. Also: Terrence Mann, Freema Agyeman, Alfonso Herrera, Erendira Ibarra, Adam Shapiro, Ness Bautista and Joe Pantoliano — yes, Joey Pants. All 12 episodes are available for instant binging, if you are so moved. And things are so initially confounding, you may be.
Showtime has had a good run of Friday night music documentaries. That all ends tonight with “One Direction — Where We Are: Live from San Siro Stadium” (Showtime, 9 p.m.), which looks like teeny bop bait featuring the boy band’s concert in Milan before screaming converts.
How ebola became an epidemic and the failure to deal with sexual assaults on campus are the subjects on a new “Vice” (HBO, 11 p.m.).
The new series “Preach” (Lifetime, 10 p.m.) looks at four female women of the pulpit, some of whom are in the business of healing, seeing the future and curing addictions.
Another new reality show, “Catching Monsters” (Discovery, 10 p.m.) joins fishermen in search of Atlantic bluefin tuna. Now, where is the series about preaching fishermen?
“Real Time with Bill Maher” (HBO, 10 p.m.) returns with a new episode, with Ian Bremmer,Nina Turner, Rick Lazio and Lewis Black.
Turner Classic Movies’ “Summer of Darkness” features a season of noir on Fridays, starting with “Nora Prentiss” (8 p.m.), “Woman on the Run” (10:15 p.m.), “Dark Passage” (11:45 p.m.), “Born to Kill” (1:45 a.m.) and “L.A. Confidential” (3:30 a.m.).
Baseball includes Angels at Yankees (MLB, 7 p.m.).
The French Open (Tennis Channel, 7 a.m.; NBC, 11 a.m.) reaches the men’s semifinals.
