Among the harsh rhetoric regarding immigration in the current political campaigns, here’s a look at a gentle and effective program in Switzerland designed specifically to help emigres from such far flung places as Afghanistan, Servia, Cameroon and Venezuela who arrive with their own emotional baggage and hard luck stories only to be confronted with all manner of language problems in fitting into their new country.
Enter the perfectly-named Christian Zingg, who carefully nurtures the young people so they can each reach their dreams and potential by the end of the two year program. Anna Thommen’s “Neuland,” which means “New Territory” followed their rewarding and unexpectedly heart-warming efforts, tonight on “POV” (PBS, 10 p.m., check local listings).
Another internationally-minded documentary tonight tracks Lobsang Phuntsok, a former Buddhist monk as he returns to Tibet from the U.S. to help abandoned children in Andrew Hinton and Johnny Burke’s documentary “Tashi and the Monk” (HBO, 9 p.m.).
In a third documentary, prominent gay, lesbian and transgender figures from a dozen countries are sought out in a nearly one-year trip around bye world by filmmakers Jennifer Chang and Lisa Dazols in “Out & Around” (Logo, 9 p.m.).
The voices of Angela Bassett and John Goodman and the music of the Plain White T’s are part of the new feature-length sequel “Curious Geoge 3: Back to the Jungle” (PBS, check local listings), premiering next to a replay of the last one “Curious George 2: Follow That Monkey” (PBS, check local listings).
Elsewhere, it’s down to the Top 10 already on “So You Think You Can Dance” (Fox, 8 p.m.).
Things get a little more desperate on “Bachelor in Paradise” (ABC, 8 p.m.).
“Penn & Teller: Fool Us” (The CW, 8 p.m.) has been picked up for another season, which means they’ve fooled the network too.
On the new “36 Hours” (Travel, 8 p.m.), a chef and a soccer player — Kristen Kish and Kyle Martino — get the best things out of a city in just a day and a half, inspired by the New York Times travel column. First stop, Berlin.
