James Burrows may be responsible for the rhythms of what America finds funny through his longtime direction of popular three-camera sitcoms , from “Cheers,” Weill and grace” to “Taxi,” “Friends,” “Frasier” and the pilots of “The Big Bang Theory and “Two and a Half Men.” On the occasion of his 1,000 episode of directing, he gets a sweeps special “Must-See TV: A Tribute to James Burrows” (NBC, 9 p.m.) which includes a look back at his work going back to his 1974 work on “The Carol Burnett Show” as well as a near-“Friends” reunion.
It’s weird that it took so long for ABC to revive its mother company’s onetime flagship showcase, but it does so to mark the birthday of its theme park in the special “The Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60” (ABC, 8 p.m.). The fifth season of “Girls” (HBO, 10 p.m.) begins with a big event — Marnie’s wedding, which succeeds in amassing the cast together even though that portends the usual disasters. Good to have them back though.
Good, too, to have the second season of “Togetherness” (HBO, 10:30 p.m.), which only got better during its first. What’s occurred here is surprising: The schlub has become a success and the beautiful girl he pined for is now pining for him, which is kind of what happens in “Love” (Netflix, streaming). Its own big event is getting together in New Orleans for an on-set surprise.
For the second episode of “Vinyl” (HBO, 9 p.m.) — and the first hour-long episode— it flashes back to when Richie and Devon first met, amid a Velvet Underground show at a Exploding Plastic Inevitable. But there’s also a marvelous scene in which she sings along with Karen Carpenter (as voiced by Aimee Mann).
