As anticipated as it is, the “30 Rock: A One Time Special” (NBC, 8 p.m.) won’t be as swell as the pandemic reunion episode that preceded it, from “Parks & Recreation. Instead, this one is meant not just to bring back its stars Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan and Jane Krakowski, but to hype upcoming NBC Universal products — on the broadcast network, but also its cable holdings from Syfy to USA.
The inspiration are those network upfronts, which mix show previews and company cheerleading with occasional star power and actual entertainment. And the intent is to promote. But because it is also intent on hyping the company’s new free streaming service Peacock, many independently owned NBC stations (that is those not owned by the network itself) will pre-empt the show. They don’t want to give free advertising to cable and streaming services that would only take away from its business. (For those affected viewers, it will be on Peacock Friday).
