The colorful world of the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers and its creation is mirrored by a freewheeling new series “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” (HBO, 9 p.m.). Adam McKay directs the first episode with a jittery hand, throwing in winks and explanatory titles as characters, led by John C. Reilly, break the fourth wall to address the audience. He’s great in his role as Playboy Mansion enthusiast turned NBA owner; so is Quincy Isaiah as Magic Johnson. And Jason Clarke is over the top as short-fuse coach Jerry West. It’s fast moving and wildly entertaining.

Courteney Cox stars in the new series “Shining Vale” (Start, 10:20 p.m.) about a family who moves into a house that may be haunted. The cast also includes Greg Kinnear, Mira Sorvino and Judith Light.

“Outlander” (Start, 9 p.m.) returns for its sixth season, adapting Diana Gabaldon’s sixth book in the series, “A Breath of Snow and Ashes.”

Another romance in period costume comes in “The Courtship” (NBC, 8 p.m.), a reality dating show in dressup, using dating methods common in the 18th century.

Husband and wife team Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally host The 37th Film Independent Spirit Awards (IFC, 5 p.m.). The annual celebration of the year’s best indie films is usually held Oscar weekend, but was moved up this year as if to influence voting for the Oscars, which will be held March 27.

“Killing Eve” (BBC America, 8 p.m.) returns for its fourth and final season, with Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer continuing their deadly cat and mouse game.

Back for its second season is “Transplant” (NBC, 10 p.m.) the Canadian hospital drama with John Hannah.
