It might have been the most daunting task in television: taking Jon Stewart’s place anchoring late night’s topical humor powerhouse. But against all odds, brainy South African comedian kept a cool hand on proceedings during times that would have drove most crazy — and a pandemic to boot.
Tonight, after seven years, “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” (Comedy Central, 11 p.m.) comes to an end as the host steps down.
A permanent replacement hasn’t been named but a slew of rotating guest hosts will step in starting Jan. 17, including Al Franken, Chelsea Handler, D.L. Hughley, Leslie Jones, John Leguizamo, Hasan Minhaj, Kaleidoscope Penn, Sarah Silverman, Wanda Sykes and Marlon Wayans. But tonight, the night is all Noah, who will go on to standup comedy and probably more books. He apparently won’t make a huge deal about his exit; he’s booked a guest, Neal Brennan.
