Started with a tribute to the singer and activist Harry Belafonte, who died last week at 96. Then it was all about the first of the merry month of May, and then, songs of maybe / maybe not.
A packed day of birthdays included those of Judy Collins (turning 84), Rita Coolidge (77), Ray Parker Jr. (68) and Bernard Butler of Suede (52), as well as that of Sonny James, born this day in 1928, and Shirley Horn (1934).
We’ll have to trust people who say today is the birthday of bluesmen Charley Patton (born this day in 1891 possibly) and Little Walter (1930, maybe).
Noted the anniversary of the passing of the musical jokester Spike Jones, and closed with Drive-By Truckers, who just drove past D.C. with a pair of shows over the weekend.
We weren’t without technical difficulties, the most annoying of which may be the recording of not quite all of show (and some weird skipping around) for the second week in a row. Try it here anyway. The setlist follows.
