There’s no Keanu Reeves in sight in the new prequel “The Continental: From the World of John Wick” (Peacock, streaming) that centers on the early days of the crime lord and hotel manager Winston Scott and the concierge Charon. Colin Woodell and Ben Robson take the roles Ian McShane and Lance Reddick portray in the John Wick film series. But there’s star power in that era’s hotel manager, played by Mel Gibson.The series has three movie-sized episodes, released weekly.
A family film franchise gets a similar extension in Robert Rodriguez’s “Spy Kids: Armageddon” (Netflix, streaming), with Connor Esterson and Everly Carganilla playing the current pair of kids. Zachary Levy and Gina Rodriguez play their parents in the new film.
There’s already Oscar talk about Gael Garcia Bernal’s portrayal of a gay amateur wrestler who creates his own popular ring persona “Cassandro” (Prime Video, streaming) in Roger Ross Williams’ film, based on the true life “exotico” Lucha Libra creation of Saúl Armendáriz. Bad Bunny and Raúl Castillo also star.
Dawn Porter’s new four-part documentary series “Deadlocked: How America Shaped the Supreme Court” (Showtime, 8 p.m.) looks at the recent history of the high court, its confirmation battles and decisions, starting with Thurgood Marshall’s efforts to end segregation in the 1950s and ‘60s.
One thing you can say about “Love is Blind” (Netflix, streaming), which is starting its fifth season, is that things move fast — with proposals coming after the second or third episode. The first four episodes (of ten) are available today, after that, there’s getting to know each other in person, meeting families and making the final decision. That’s where the couples dwindle and the episodes go on (on subsequent Fridays).
From South Korea comes the Western action series “Song of the Bandits” (Netflix, streaming), set in the 1920s during the Japanese occupation.
Halloween is imminent so here’s the feature “The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster” (AllBLK, Shudder, streaming) starring Layla DeLeon Hayes as a teen who tries to bring her murdered brother back to life in the “Frankenstein” manner.
There is also “Haunted Harmony Mysteries: Murder in G Major” (Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, 9 p.m.), about a conductor in Ireland who stumbles onto a composer and suspected murderer. Tamera Mowry-Housley and Risteárd Cooper star.
“American Masters” (PBS, 9 p.m., check local listings) profiles First Amendment attorney Floyd Abrams and his famous cases, from the Pentagon Papers to Citizens United.
NFL wide receiver Devante Adams upgrades his grandmother’s home on “Secret Celebrity Renovation” (CBS, 8 p.m.).
“CMT Crossroads” (CMT, 10 p.m.) pairs Maren Morris with Hozier.
Unexplored territory in Alaska reaps reward on a two hour “Gold Rush” (Discovery, 8 p.m.).
“Outback Opal Hunters” (Discovery, 10 p.m.) install a solar plant.
Serpent gods on “Ancient Aliens: Declassified” (History, 8 p.m.) apparently have the power to expand the episode to more than four hours.
“Ready to Love” (OWN, 9:30 p.m.) takes four women to New Orleans in search of partners.
