One of the most worrisome New Year’s Eves in recent history came two dozen years ago as 1999 was about to turn to the year 2000, dubbed Y2K. But would a society already dependent on computers melt down as monitors switched to 00? There sufficient fear to fuel a whole survivalist industry and all manner of conspiracy theories. It’s all recalled, with a bit of nostalgia for a time when Bill Clinton was president and Jeff Bezos still had a bit of hair in the documentary “Time Bomb Y2K” (HBO, 10 p.m.). 

The story of the 70s actor is told in the documentary “I Am Burt Reynolds” (CW, 9 p.m.).

Some of the bigger college football bowl games are today, with Mississippi vs. Penn State (ESPN, noon) in the Peach Bowl, Maryland vs. Auburn (ABC, 2 p.m.) in the Music City Bowl, Georgia vs. Florida State (ESPN, 4 p.m.) in the Orange Bowl, and Wyoming vs. Toledo (CW, 4:30 p.m.) in the Arizona Bowl. 

There’s also an NFL game tonight with Detroit at Dallas (ABC, ESPN, 8:15 p.m.).

“All the Best, All the Worst 2023” (CNN, 8 p.m.) gets a replay. 

A woman falsely charged with the murder of her best friend’s husband, escapes from jail and goes on the run with her husband in the made-for-TV thriller “Secret Love Triangle” (Lifetime, 8 p.m.). 

“First-Time Buyer’s Club” (OWN, 9 p.m.) is a new house hunting show on Oprah Winfrey’s channel. 

Kim has a surprise for Maurice on “Love & Marriage: Huntsville” (OWN, 8 p.m.).

The splendor of past events by the American Film Institute is surveyed in The AFI Life Achievement Award: 50th Anniversary Special (TCM, 8 p.m. and midnight). Sandwiched between the showings is a film from the first AFI recipient in 1973, director John Ford, with “The Searchers” (TCM, 9:45 p.m.). Later comes Robert Altman’s “The Player” (1:45 a.m.) and Nicholas Ray’s “In a Lonely Place” (4 a.m.). 

Hockey has Carolina at Toronto (NHL, 7 p.m.). 

Men’s college basketball includes Pittsburgh at Syracuse (CW, noon), Hofstra at St. John’s (Fox Sports 1, noon), Quinnipiac at Florida (ESPNU, 1 p.m.), Creighton at Marquette (CBS, 2 p.m.), Queens at Duke (CW, 2 p.m.), Virginia Tech at Wake Forest (ESPN2, 2 p.m.), Indiana State at Michigan State (Fox Sports 1, 2 p.m.), Wichita State at Kansas (ESPN2, 4 p.m.), UCLA at Oregon (CBS, 4 p.m.), Chicago State at DePaul (Fox Sports 1, 4 p.m.) and Ohio State at West Virginia (Fox, 7 p.m.).
