The loneliness found in Edward Hopper’s famed paintings may have reflected his own life, where things were shaky between he and his wife, a fellow artist named Jo Nivison Hopper. Their words are spoken in a new documentary by J.K. Simmons and Christine Baranski respectively. Isabel May provides the voice of a romantic interest of Hopper, Alta Hilsdale in the portrait “Hopper: An American Love Story,” making its debut on “American Masters” (PBS, 9 p.m., check local listings). 

It comes before what could be some important reminders in an an election year: “A Citizen’s Guide to Preserving Democracy” (PBS, 10 p.m., check local listings), based on Richard Haass’ book “The Bill of Obligations: the Ten Habits of Good Citizens.” 

The new Jon Cryer comedy “Extended Family” (NBC, 8:30 p.m.) has its time slot premiere. Donald Faison and Abigail Spencer also star. It’s accompanied by second season premiere of the revived “Night Court” (NBC, 8 p.m.) with Melissa Rauch and John Larroquette. 

“Finding Your Roots” (PBS, 8 p.m., check local listings) begins its 10th season, with host Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. looking into the family trees of singers Alanis Morissette and Ciara. 

A new season also comes for “Moonshiners” (Discovery, 8 p.m.) who must live and operate in an area free of revenuers. 

Rob Lowe hosts the new quiz show “The Floor” (Fox, 9 p.m.), involving 81 players who claim to be experts in different areas. It comes after a new episode of “Name That Tune” (Fox, 8 p.m.) with Lisa Loeb vs. Jesse McCartney and Corbin bleu vs. Craig Ferguson. 

The fifth and final season resumes for the “Fosters” spinoff “Good Trouble” (Freeform, 10 p.m.). 

Those who never subscribed to Hulu will be charmed by the broadcast debut of the Emmy award-winning “Only Murders in the Building” (ABC, 9 p.m.), the comedy mystery series starring Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, begins a network run, starting with the first three episodes of the first season, from 2021. 

Utkarsh Ambudkar, Mira Sorvino and Lisa Ann Walter play the semifinals on “Celebrity Jeopardy!” (ABC, 8 p.m.). 

Last night’s “America’s Got Talent: Fantasy League” (NBC, 9 p.m.) gets a replay the night after its premiere. 

“Road Wars” (A&E, 9:30 p.m.) turn to “Customer Wars” (A&E, 10 p.m.), as TV wars proliferate. 

Hunter goes into self-preservation mode on “Tyler Perry’s The Oval” (BET, 9 p.m.). 

Deep-fried seafood is in the appetizer basket on “Chopped” (Food, 8 p.m.). 

“The UnBelievable with Dan Aykroyd” (History, 10 p.m.) looks at outlandish inventions.
