Those who can’t wait for the Oscars should find a way to turn into the UK’s big film award ceremony live from the Royal Festival Hal in London, The BAFTA Awards (BritBox, 2 p.m.). David Tennant hosts. 

While in some years there is an overlap with U.S. awards shows causing nominees to choose, there’s les of a chance happening the night of The People’s Choice Awards (NBC, E!, 8 p.m.), hosted by Simu Liu, though “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” are up for the most awards. But also nominated: 

80 for Brady” and “Cocaine Bear.” Performances are expected from Kylie Minogue, Lainey Wilson and Lenny Kravitz, who will get a special award, as will Adam Sandler. It till all be preceded by a “Live from the Red Carpet” (E!, 6 p.m.).

The perennially prize-winning “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” (HBO, 11 p.m.) returns for a new season, and none too soon. 

As big as the NBA wants to be, it’s weird that the big prime time All-Star Game (TNT, TBS, 8 p.m.) is only on cable. 

Hockey has a second game in its midwinter Stadium Series this weekend, with the Rangers vs. Islanders (ABC, 3 p.m.) from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

And, proving it is a big sports weekend (if not a Super one), the Daytona 500 (Fox, 2:30 p.m.) is run.

“American Idol” (ABC, 8 p.m.) returns for its 22nd season with its judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and Katy Perry, though she has recently said this season will be her last. Ryan Seacrest again hosts. 

“True Detective: Night Country” (HBO, 9 p.m.) gets its lights turned on. It’s the season finale of the variation set in Alaska, which has been more popular than more recent iterations, although made by a different team. 

The fourth season also ends for “All Creatures Great and Small” (PBS, 9 p.m., check local listings), as Christmas approaches. 

Queen Latifah’s action series “The Equalizer” (CBS, 8 p.m.) is back for its fourth season; “CSI: Vegas” (CBS, 10 p.m.) is back for its third.

Also returning for its 16th (!) season is the odd ABC News candid camera foray, “What Would You Do?” (ABC, 10 p.m.). 

And the 17th season of “Naked and Afraid” (Discovery, 8 p.m.) begins in South Africa. 

Men’s college basketball includes Florida Atlantic at South Florida (ESPN, noon), Wichita State at Charlotte (ESPN2, noon), Loyola Chicago at Rhode Island (CBS Sports, noon), Purdue at Ohio State (CBS, 1 p.m.), Bradley at Northern Iowa (ESPN2, 2 p.m.), Chattanooga at Forman (CBS Sports, 2 p.m.), Northwestern at Indiana (Fox Sports 1, 3 p.m.), Memphis at SMU (ESPN, 4 p.m.), Seton Hall at St. John’s (Fox Sports 1, 5 p.m.) and Utah at UCLA (Fox Sports 1. 7 p.m.).

Women’s games include Georgia Tech at North Carolina State (CW, noon), Georgia at South Carolina (ABC, 1 p.m.), Virginia Tech at Louisville (ESPN, 2 p.m.), Columbia at Harvard (ESPNU, 2 p.m.) and Texas Tech at Baylor (ESPN2, 4 p.m.).

Final rounds are played in the Genesis Invitational (Golf, 1 p.m.; CBS, 3 p.m.).

College softball includes Texas at Northwestern (ESPN2, 9:30 a.m.), Central Florida vs. UCLA (ESPN, 6 p.m.) and Florida State vs. Tennessee (ESPN, 8 p.m.).
