Tax Day brings The Beatles’ “Taxman,” of course, but also another dozen songs about taxation, ten more songs about paying the man; and 17 additional tracks about the root of all this consternation – money.
Technical problems in the show seemed to start happening when the most incendiary anti-tax songs were playing — “Me and the I.R.S.,” in which Johnny Paycheck suggests where the agency should shove it, and Sharon Jones, who wonders “What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes?” (Sorry about the glitches; they shouldn’t appear in the archived edition here).
We toasted the 130th birthday of Bessie Smith (who of course is no longer with us), and the 80th of Dave Edmunds (who is). Also blew out candles for rockabilly cat Bob Luman, country’s Chris Stapleton, and pop songwriter Linda Perry. Closed with some Joey Ramone, who left us this day in 2001.
