From the director of “Lion King,” here’s a closer look at one of the eccentric characters who popped up in that series, exotic animal broker Tonia Haddix, in “Chimp Crazy” (HBO, 10 p.m.) in which she fights to retain custody of seven chimpanzees after the state removes them to a professional animal reserve. “Monkey love is totally different than you have with your kid,” are her first words in the four-part documentary series. “The bond is much, much deeper.”
Deep is the craziness too. And “Chimp Crazy” may be creepier a spectacle than “Lion King,” in part because of all the children’s clothes the chimps have to wear — and their ferocity later in life. It seems like the kind of topic that might otherwise interest “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” (HBO, 11 p.m.).
