Capital Radio saluted the last Soul Man, Sam Moore, who died Friday at 89, with a handful of hits from Sam & Dave, as well as some of his work with Bruce Springsteen in the decades since. We also paid tribute to Peter Yarrow, the second to go in Peter, Paul & Mary. He died last Tuesday at 86. And there were a couple of songs from Josh White Jr., whose death Dec. 28 at 84 just made the papers.
But there were also 64th birthdays to celebrate for two frontmen, Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips and Suggs of the English ska group Madness.
Highlights of the songs that entered the public domain on Jan. 1 — all published in 1929 or first recorded in 1924 were heard, as well as couple more recent renderings of those classics from Elvis Costello and Sinead O’Connor.
One of them was Al Jolson’s “California, Here I Come,” which kicked off a baker’s dozen of songs showing love for the Golden State, undergoing the worst fire disaster.
