“The Righteous Gemstones” (HBO, 10 p.m.) begins its fourth and final season with an elaborate one-off exploring the Civil War roots of the family, in which Bradly Cooper guest stars as an chaplin impersonator. Danny McBride, above, doesn’t even appear, but he directs. 

“American Idol” (ABC, 8 p.m.) begins its 23rd season with a two-hour episode of initial rounds of auditions. Carrie Underwood taking Katy Perry’s place as a judge alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Ryan Seacrest presides.

The well-regarded Navajo cop saga “Dark Winds” (AMC, 9 p.m.) returns for an eight-episode third season with a case of two missing teenage boys. The premiere also runs on BBC America and Sundance. 

The rise and fall of the social media site is told in the new documentary series “Twitter: Breaking the Bird” (CNN, 10 p.m.). 

On “Yellowjackets” (Showtime, 8 p.m.), Misty investigates a suspicious death.

“The Real Housewives of Atlanta” (Bravo, 8 p.m.) return for its 16th season with Porsha Williams and Phaedra Parks returning to the cast.

“United States of Scandal” (CNN, 8 p.m.) with Jake Tapper starts its second season by telling the story of the FBI sting ABSCAM. 

A double amputee is among the contestants on the new season of “Naked and Afraid” (Discovery, 8 p.m.), which starts in Belize. 

“The Americas” (NBC, 8 p.m.), the rare primetime broadcast nature show, from the producers of “Planet Earth” continues with a look at the frozen north in Alberta. Tom Hanks narrates. 

Issa Rae travels to her father’s homeland of Senegal on “No Taste Like Home with Antoni Porowski” (National Geographic, 9 p.m.). 

Among a couple of shows that have started during the TV Eye hiatus the past few weeks is “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” (NBC, 10 p.m.) about secrets in a Detroit suburb. 

Another is “Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue” (MGM+, 9 p.m.), a mystery series about plane crash survivors in a Mexican jungle.

Ted drags an old friend into his mob case on “Suits LA” (NBC, 9 p.m.). 

“Crash Course Cuisine with Hudson Yang” (National Geographic, 10 p.m.) is a new series in which the “Fresh Off the Boat” actor and would-be chef travels the world to bolster his skills. 

A new series looks for valuables among the junk hoarded in ordinary attics, basements and garages on “Filthy Fortunes” (Discovery, 10:15 p.m.).

“The Equalizer” (CBS, 10 p.m.) helps a mother after her son disappears in a mall. 

Kang has grandaddy issues on “Grimsburg” (Fox, 8:30 p.m.).

“The Last Woman Who Lived Here” (Lifetime, 8 p.m.) is a made-for-TV thriller about a couple that moves into a home where a murder has occurred. 

Tyrannis plots to skip his own wedding on “Krapopolis” (Fox, 9:30 p.m.).

“The 100,000 Pyramid” (ABC, 10 p.m.) begins its eighth season.

Pythons and birds are released to the wild on the first of two new episodes of “Malawi Wildlife Rescue” (Nat Geo Wild, 9 p.m.).

“Home Town Takeover” (HGTV, 8 p.m.) begins a new season in Sebring, Fla. 

A hot tub session turns cool on “Married to Medicine” (Bravo, 9:15 p.m.).

“Tracker” (CBS, 8 p.m.) looks for a mother in Ohio.

In honor of “White Lotus,” Turner Classic Movies has a couple fils with similar themes,  “The Last of Sheila” (8 p.m.) and “Evil Under the Sun” (10:15 p.m.). The silent movie at midnight is “That Dumb Girl of Portici” (12:30 a.m.), followed by two from Spain, “El Verdugo (The Executioner)” (2:30 a.m.) and “El Cochecito (The Wheelchair)” (4:30 a.m.).

NBA action includes Denver at Oklahoma City (ABC, 1 p.m.), Phoenix at Dallas (ABC, 3:30 p.m.) and Cleveland at Milwaukee (ESPN, 8 p.m.).
