For the first show back after three weeks away, the names of the artists who died — and deserved a tribute — was up to 17. They include the 17-year-old singer of “Joltin’ Joe Dimaggio” who died at 100, the rocker David Johansen of the New York Dolls and Joey Molland of Badfinger and a whole lot of people in soul, from Angie Stone, who died in a post-show car accident March 1, to the longtime Cook County Commissioner Jerry Butler.
There were birthdays to celebrate, though, for Bix Beiderbecke, Edie Brickell, Norman Blake, Dean Torrence of Jan and Dean, and a pair of producers, Rick Rubin and Timbaland
A terrible cold caused a few violent coughing jags that prevented some of my usual fun facts (So I’ll say it right here that “Dead Man’s Curve” was recorded at Brian Wilson’s mother’s house).
