“Rooster” (HBO, 10 p.m.) is a new comedy series that has Bill Lawrence’s fingerprints all over it. Like “Ted Lasso,” its central clown, in this case Steve Carell, has an essential sadness; the banter is a constant drumbeat of put-down gags. And there are literal people from other Lawrence shows — Phil Dunster of “Ted Lasso” plays a philandering son-in-law and John C. McGinley from “Scrubs” appears. Set in a college, it’s likable enough, largely because of Carell but it’s not the quality of the network’s other Sunday night fare, particularly the new “DTF St. Louis” (HBO, 9 p.m.), which has its second episode tonight.
