Netflix is certainly hit or miss when it comes to comedies, but the new “Big Mistakes” (Netflix, streaming) looks like a hit. It’s another broad family comedy from Dan Levy of “Schitt’s Creek” fame, playing a gay pastor in a small town where he and his sassy sister (Taylor Ortega), an ex-actress turned school teacher, get mixed up in a criminal blackmail scheme.
That they could have fixed the problem with a sane approach undermines the story a bit, but makes way for the comedy in which there is a lot of slapstick and brash yelling, egged on perhaps by the addition of Laurie Metcalf as their mother, who happens to also be running for mayor. Written by Levy with Rachel Sennot, who was supposed to co-star before she landed her own comedy “I Love LA,” it has a lot of big laugns.
