Rene Clair, France’s first great director of comedy, whose work inspired Chaplin and the Marx Brothers, is saluted on Turner Classic Movies tonight with with five of his films. It begins with the 1930 “Sous les toits de Paris” or “Under the Roofs of Paris” (8 p.m.), that bridged the silent and sound eras in French film, by of course using mime.
It’s followed by “A Nous La Liberte” (9:45 p.m.) and “Le Million” (11:15 p.m.), both from 1931; his late period 1956 “The Grand Maneuver” (12:45 a.m.), and a 1944 film he made in Hollywood with Dick Powell, “It Happened Tomorrow” (2:45 a.m.). They are all capped by the original 1948 French version of “Gigi” (4:15 a.m.) (which was not directed by Clair).
“Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman” (Science, 10 p.m.) muses on the idea that the ocean is a living being capable of thought.
“So You Think You Can Dance” (Fox, 8 p.m.) continues auditions in Atlanta with guest judges Jenna Dewan-Tatum and Charles “Lil’ Buck” Riley.
World Cup games are Australia vs. Netherlands (ESPN, noon), Spain vs. Chile (ESPN, 3 p.m.) and Cameroon vs. Croatia (ESPN, 6 p.m.).
Amid a load of reruns the only new broadcast scripted show is “Motive” (ABC, 10 p.m.). Which means there are more new original episodes on cable, with “Suits” (USA, 9 p.m.) and “Graceland” (USA, 10 p.m.).
They just got married and now they’re thinking of parting on the season three finale of “Melissa & Joey” (ABC Family, 8 p.m.). The third season also ends for “Baby Daddy” (ABC Family, 8:30 p.m.).
Betty White runs for office on a new “Hot in Cleveland” (TV Land, 10 p.m.).
“I Love the 2000s” (VH1, 9 and 10 p.m.) moves to 2002 and 2003 and wartime.
On “Duck Dynasty” (A&E, 10 p.m.) Jase takes his son frog fishing, where duck calls don’t work. It’s accompanied by another schmo in camo, the rapper “Big Smo” (A&E, 10:30 p.m.).
Baseball includes Cubs at Miami (MLB, 12:30 p.m.) and Angels at Cleveland (EPN2, 7 p.m.).
In the College World Series, it’s Texas vs. U.C. Irvine (ESPN, 8 p.m.).
