Please welcome the worst new network show in years, with the ugliest aspects of every women-threatening CBS procedural into one series. Kidnapping? Stalking? Setting women on fire? It’s all here, in a format known as network TV thriller. Kevin Williamson, creator of the “Scream” series, is probably kicking himself that he didn’t include beheadings as well. All that and Dylan McDermott too starring in “Stalker” (CBS, 10 p.m.), whose sole faint hope, Maggie Q, doesn’t have a chance.
Earlier, Jennifer Love Hewitt joins the cast of “Criminal Minds” (CBS, 9 p.m.) as the 10th season begins in California, where victims there have been made unidentifiable.
Part two of a three part series based on penguin spy cameras on “Nature” (PBS, 8 p.m., check local listings) concentrates on the newborn.
How they’ve grown: Alex is getting a college tour on “Modern Family” (ABC, 9 p.m.).
And the sex talk is a problem, too, on “Black-ish” (ABC, 9:30 p.m.).
Not surprising that the morning TV appearance by Rayna on “Nashville” (ABC, 10 p.m.) comes on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” where actual person Luke Bryan is also on board.
One of the Twinnies, Nadiya Peterson, was first to be voted off of “Survivor” (CBS, 8 p.m.) this season in part because everyone was told she was part of “The Amazing Race.” That didn’t happen to John Rocker, though word about his fame is spread tonight.
Of the new shows trying to establish themselves, “The Mysteries of Laura” (NBC, 8 p.m.) is doing surprisingly well; “Red Band Society” (Fox, 9 p.m.) is not.
Gluten free diets are no joke, except on “South Park” (Comedy Central, 10 p.m.), where everything is.
Water polo is the prize tonight on “Hell’s Kitchen” (Fox, 8 p.m.) for some reason. Later, it’s “Top Chef Duels” (Bravo, 10 p.m.).
Not sure the puppet ploy will work so well for a parole officer on “Key & Peele” (Comedy Central, 10:30 p.m.).
If the one-game National League wild card playoff is anything like last night’s American League contest, you’d better set aside five hours for San Francisco at Pittsburgh (ESPN, 8 p.m.)
A month-long, 34-film, Wednesday night salute to Janet Leigh begins tonight on Turner Classic Movies with “The Romance of Rosy Ridge” (8 p.m.), “If Winter Comes” (10 p.m.), “Little Women” (midnight), “Hills of Home” (2:15 a.m.) and “Words and Music” (4 a.m.).
Preseason hockey includes Washington at Buffalo (Comcast, 7 p.m.) and Pittsburgh at Detroit (NHL, 7:30 p.m.).
