JoeDirtThere are plenty of head-scratching moments at the TV Critics Association press tour, when the common response is: who ever came up with this?

But only a few are so unexpected, you think they’re very announcement is a practical joke.

That occurred Tuesday in the session for “Joe Dirt 2,” billed as “the first ever made-for-digital sequel to a major motion picture” coming this summer on the online platform Crackle.

Even halfway through the session with David Spade and a director, you expected someone to break in and say, “oh, just kidding.”

But no. It’s actually happening.

“I’ve been trying to I’ve been wanting to do a sequel to this pretty soon after we did it, to be honest,” said Spade, who spared press the elaborate mullet wig. “We were going to do a Joe Dirt cartoon, an animated show, a while back, and then we didn’t do that.”

Doing it online with original producer and director Fred Wolf seemed to make sense, he said, wanting “to be a part of the future and get the sequel that goes straight on, where people can see it right away.”

” I don’t think I’ve ever worked on a project where I’ve had more fans come up and say, “When are you guys going to do a sequel to ‘Joe Dirt’?,” said co-star Brittany Daniels, who was on hand for the panel, though the comment may say more about her own career than the strengths of “Dirt.”

“So when David finally came and said we’re going to do it, and to finally be able to tell our fans, they’re just so excited about it,” she added.

But there was more than just fan demand, Spade said. “We liked the movie. Something about first one, whatever it was, resonated, at least with fans of mine. So when it comes up this much, we had to take it more seriously. Because I felt like that was a demand, in a way, from my fans.”

New to the cast is Mark McGrath, the rocker turned game show host, who calls “Joe Dirt” “bigger today than it ever was. It’s kind of one of those iconic movies that, you know, you’re hung over on a Saturday or Sunday, you see it come up on a channel, and you must watch it. It’s one of those. And coming from the rock-and-roll world, it’s a movie that needs to be on our bus at all times for the last 14 years.”

Christopher Walken, Dennis Miller, Patrick Warburton and Adam Beach will also be part of the sequel, whose full title is “Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser” and is scheduled to be released in the summer.
