Now it’s all glitz and hype when TV stars meet movie stars, dress up and drink, as the event kicks off the overlong award seasons.

And it will likely be entertaining to watch Ricky Gervais make fun of it. The winners will likely be a mix of deserving work and genuine head scratchers, owing to the whims of the always mysterious Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

For some it’s all about just what people are wearing so there will be three hours of Red Carpet Coverage (E!, 6 p.m.; NBC, 7 p.m.) and even more when it’s done with the “E! After Party: the 2016 Golden Globe Awards” (E!, 11 p.m.).

Brash is what “Shameless” (Showtime, 9 p.m.) has been since the beginning. So why not start its sixth season on Golden Globe night? It begins with a kinder, gentler Frank mourning Bianca and Debbie getting a pregnancy test. It repeats at 10 and 11.

The new “Live to Tell” (History, 10 p.m.) is not about the Madonna song, but about first-person accounts of combat missions by the U.S. Special Operations Forces. First up, a story of Marc Lee, a Navy SEAL killed in Iraq a decade ago.

NFL playoffs today have Seattle at Minnesota (NBC, 1:05 p.m.) and Green Bay at Washington (Fox, 4:40 p.m.).

There’s some “Downton Abbey” Edith and Marigold drama on “Masterpiece” (PBS, 9 p.m., check local listings). Last Sunday’s season premiere reruns at 7:30 p.m.

Add to the number of campaigners in Iowa, Peter from “The Good Wife” (CBS, 9 p.m.).

“Madame Secretary” (CBS, 8 p.m.) seems a little reckless about a possible Russian showdown.

Bart is smitten by a new teachers on “The Simpsons” (Fox, 8 p.m.).

The effects of nature are considered on “Explorer” (National Geographic, 8 p.m.).

“CSI: Cyber” (CBS, 10 p.m.) there’s a hacked air traffic control communication system, something that may also be covered on “X-Ray Mega Airport” (Smithsonian, 9 p.m.).

the very monarchy structure is threatened on “The Royals” (E!, 10 p.m.).

Mitch proposes after his parents make their choice on “Married by Mom and Dad” (TLC, 10 p.m.).

Turner Classic Movies moves from a pair of films about English governesses — “Jane Eyre” (8 p.m.) and “Anna and the King of Siam” (9:45 p.m.) — and moves to the films of director Yasujiro Ozo, with the silent “A Story of Floating Weeds” (midnight) followed by “Equinox Flower” (2 a.m.) and “End of Summer” (4 a.m.).
