The most suspect of the awards shows (Lady Gaga was a best actress winner last year, Pia Zadora style, keep in mind), the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s 74th Golden Globe Awards (NBC, 8 p.m.) nonetheless still gathers stars of movies and TV, and so it becomes a main entertainment event.
The tone will certainly be different with Jimmy Fallon hosting instead of Ricky Gervais. Meryl Streep will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
Before the event, of course, Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana Rancic will be “Live from the Red Carpet” (E!, 6 p.m.). The NBC carpet show starts at 7 p.m.
A new episode of “Sherlock” on “Masterpiece” (PBS, 9 p.m., check local listings) titled “The Lying Detective” has Benedict Cumberbatch’s character squaring off with a new enemy. Meanwhile, the other Holmes rushes to find a woman held captive for years on “Elementary” (CBS, 10 p.m.).
The four part documentary “The Real Mad Men of Advertising” (Smithsonian, 9 p.m.) begins, looking at early days of Madison Avenue with commentary from “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner.
Helen allows Noah to come home to heal on “The Affair” (Showtime, 10 p.m.).
The new “Everest Rescue” (Discovery, 10 p.m.) follows a group of helicopter pilots that rescue climbers of one of the world’s most challenging mountain under the worst conditions.
Wild Card weekend ends with Miami at Pittsburgh (CBS, 1:05 p.m.) in the AFC and Giants at Green Bay (Fox, 4:40 p.m.) in the NFC.
On “NCIS: Los Angeles” (CBS, 8 p.m.), a Navy reservist is killed while protecting a city councilman
Mari and Mariah fight during a trip to a mountain resort on “Sister Wives” (TLC, 8 p.m.).
On “The Librarians” (TNT, 8 p.m.), people spontaneously combust at a vampire-run spa.

The traditional process of changing presidents delineated in “Transition of Power: The Presidency” (History, 9 p.m.) probably isn’t applicable this year.
The “Worst Cooks in America” (Food, 9 p.m.) prove they can’t even do eggs.
“Extreme Waterparks” (Travel, 9 p.m.) are visited in the Netherlands, North Carolina and Greece.
Brazil’s Little Silver Grotto is one of the “Top Secret Swimming Holes” (Travel, 10 p.m.).
An ankle injury has Tina telecommunity to class on “Bob’s Burgers” (Fox, 9:30 p.m.).
