Even at the best intentioned integrated high school, attitudes on race persist institutionally. That may be why the administration and researchers at suburban Chicago’s Oak Park and River Forest High School didn’t want to participate in “America to Me” (Starz, 10 p.m.) a 10-part documentary series from Steve James of “Hoop Dreams” fame.
The students that do agree to have documentary crews follow them tell friends it will be like “Jersey Shore” or “Cheaters.” Instead, it’s an insightful and sometimes heartbreaking look at the divisions that begins with national attention the school got when white students were upset they couldn’t go to a Black Lives Matter assembly.
Coincidentally, the premiere of “America to Me” which borrows its title from a Langston Hughes poem, comes opposite the first season finale of Sacha Baron Cohen’s similarly named “Who is America?” (Showtime, 10 p.m.), which still has some Sarah Palin footage to show.
