Another major sport resumes its season today when hockey gets under way, in the relatively safe confines of Canada. Still, taking the ice in August is a shaky proposition, so they jump straight to the Stanley Cup qualifiers, with Montreal vs. Pittsburgh (NBC, 8 p.m.) in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference qualifying round. Other games include Chicago at Edmonton (NBC, 3 p.m.), Florida vs. Islanders (NBC Sports, 4 p.m.) and Winnipeg vs. Calgary (NBC Sports, 10:30 p.m.).

It runs against the eerie silence of the prime time baseball game, Red Sox at Yankees (Fox, 7 p.m.). Other games include Cincinnati at Detroit (Fox Sports 1, 1 p.m.) and Texas at San Francisco (MLB, 10 p.m.).

Here’s an interesting talk show: Soccer star Megan Rapinoe sits down with journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and comedian Hasan Minhaj for political conversation in the debut episode of “Seeing America with Megan Rapinoe” (HBO, 10 p.m.). In all, it sounds better than “Girlfriends Check-In” (OWN, 10 p.m.).

The 2011 nature series “Earthlight” (BBC America, 8 p.m.) flies again, accompanying birds across six continents in six hour-long episodes, all of which are narrated by David Tennant, who once dominated Saturdays on the same network by portraying “Doctor Who.”
