The 2020 Democratic National Convention (PBS, 8 p.m.; CNN, MSNBC, CSPAN, 9 p.m.; ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox News, 10 p.m.) winds up its odd virtual event — which worked surprisingly well on TV (especially if you watch it live on C-Span without the threat of analyst interruption). It culminates with Joe Biden’s acceptance speech. The Chicks perform and other speakers include Cory Booker, Gavin Newsom, Pete Buttigieg, Keisha Lance Bottoms, Chris Coons, Andrew Yang and both Tammys — Baldwin and Duckworth.
The latest twist in the reality dating scene is “Singletown” (HBO Max, streaming), a British import in which six couples breaking up start seeing others, though they do so in the same London luxury apartment building. Will they get back with their exes at the end or stay single?
The documentary short “John was Trying to Contact Aliens” (Netflix, streaming) chronicles a rural Michigan man who spent 30 years sending music and radio signals into space in hope of making a connection. The 16-minute show won the jury award for short non-fiction film at Sundance.
There’s a bit of a comedy explosion today on HBO Max starting with the San Antonio “HA Festival: The Art of Comedy” (HBO Max Streaming), hosted by Anjelah Johnson, with special appearances by Eva Longoria and Danny Trejo.
It accompanies a number of standup specials: “James Veitch: Straight to VHS” (HBO Max, streaming) and “Beth Stelling: Girl Daddy” (HBO Max, streaming). Both are from Conan O’Brien’s Team Coco productions. Plus there’s “Rose Matafeo: Dorndog” (HBO Max, streaming).
