The breakout of a new war had us brooding on the nature of the barbaric practice, before we moved to the notion of Columbus Day making way for the more welcome Indigenous Peoples’ Day, with music from Robbie Robertson, Jesse Ed Davis, John Trudell and Buffy Sainte-Marie, among others.

Then it was time to celebrate what would have been the 83rd birthday of John Lennon, and what would have been the 79th birthday of Who bassist and occasional songwriter John Entwistle.

Plus Jackson Browne turned 75 today; PJ Harvey turned 54. And there was a birthday salute to soul man O.V. Wright, born this day in 1939.

Oct. 9 is also when Belgian chanteuse Jacques Brel died in 1978 at 49 — we heard a couple of his songs as sung by David Bowie and Scott Walker. The band Suicide sang of Che Guevara, who died this day in 1967 at 39 (by execution, not suicide) and we heard what a Broadway torch singer sounded like a century ago by hearing Helen Morgan, who died this day in 1941 at 41.
