European settlers cut the herds to near-extinction at the end of that century, and are only just now being brought back, largely by the indigenous peoples for who depended so closely on them. 

Ken Burns’ latest history documentary “The American Buffalo” (PBS, 8 p.m., check local listings), a two-night, four hour event tells the story. Peter Coyote narrates; voice actors include Jeff Daniels, Paul Giamatti, Hope Davis and Derek Jacobi. It concludes tomorrow.
