After sweeping the comedy awards in 2020 for “Schitt’s Creek,” “SCTV” mainstay Eugene Levy and his son Dan Levy return to host The 76th Annual Emmy Awards (ABC, 8 p.m.), the second such event in this calendar year (the strike-delayed 2023 event was held in January).
“Shōgun” leads nominations for drama (and has already won 17 at the primetime creative arts Emmys) and the second season of “The Bear” has amassed 23 nominations — not only the most ever for a comedy series in a single year; but the most ever for a series that hardly anyone considers a comedy.
There will be 50th anniversary salutes for both “Saturday Night Live” and “Happy Days,” and a 25th anniversary of sorts for “The West Wing.” Jelly Roll will sing over the In Memoriam segment.
Earlier, Robin Roberts will host “On the Red Carpet: Live at the Emmys” (ABC, 7 p.m.). Laverne Cox will ask inane fashion questions on “Live from E!: Emmys” (E!, 6 p.m.), an hour earlier with the Glambot. Even earlier will be “Live from E!: Countdown to the Emmys” (E!, 5 p.m.). They’ll also have a “Live from E!: Emmy After Party” (E!, 11 p.m.), working on the optimistic premise that it will actually be over at 11.
Lesley Manville returns as the mystery editor Susan Ryeland in “Moonflower Murders” (PBS, 9 p.m., check local listings), a sequel to the 2022 series “Magpie Murders.” Like the first, also by Anthony Horowitz, it slyly operates in two different time settings.
It accompanies a new season of the Dutch detective yarn “Van der Valk” (PBS, 10 p.m., check local listings), its fourth. Also back is Adrian Dunbar’s retired ex-detective inspector, “Ridley” (PBS, 8 p.m., check local listings), investigating a jewelry heist that turns into a murder case.
It’s Chicago at Houston (NBC, 8:15 p.m.) in Sunday Night Football. Earlier games may include Giants at Washington (Fox, 1 p.m.), Las Vegas at Baltimore (CBS, 1 p.m.), Rams at Arizona (Fox, 4:05 p.m.) and Cincinnati at Kansas City (CBS, 4:25 p.m.).
“Baby Animal Rescue” (National Geographic, 10 p.m.), a new series with a can’t-miss title, has Giles Clark join conservationists in South Africa to help a baby pangolin and a toddler elephant.
The Forest Whitaker drama “Emperor of Ocean Park” (MGM, 9 p.m.) has its first season finale.
