Capital Radio this week saluted Garth Hudson, the last surviving member of The Band, who died Jan. 21 at 87, with songs from that standout outfit, as well as some of his work backing Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Neko Case and collaborating with Neil Young and The Sadies. Another Dylan ally, Barry Goldberg, died Jan. 22 at 82, so we featured his work alongside Mike Bloomfield, with Dylan at Newport 1965, and in Electric Flag, as well as his contributions to bands as divergent as Mitch Ryder and the Ramones.
Birthdays were celebrated for Bobby “Blue” Bland, born this day in 1930 and Elmore James, 1918; as well as Gillian Gilbert of New Order, 64, Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, 81; Margo Timmins of Cowboy Junkies, 64; and the last surviving member of The Ronettes, Nedra Talley, 79.
And there was a sampling of the wide-ranging work of bassist Jimmy Bond, born this day in 1933, who worked with everybody from Chet Baker to Frank Zappa.
And because it’s the Year of the Snake, 16 songs for that.
