The biggest snowfall in a decade required a couple dozen songs about the white winter covering that caused a pause in travel, work and school for millions. 

There were a lot of birthdays to note, from Lucinda Williams, 73, whose new album also came out days ago, to Corky Laing, 78; Fairport Convention bassist Ashley Hutchings, 81; and Anita Baker, 68. Other birthdays ranged from Jimmy Van Heusen to Eddie Van Halen, as well as Huey “Piano” Smith, Stephane Grappelli, but also Paul Newman and Angela Davis, activists both, who were also saluted in song. 

We began with a tribute to the plaid-suited UHF entertainer Uncle Floyd, who died Thursday at at 74, with a pair of songs he inspired, from the Ramones and David Bowie.
