Valentine’s Day approaches, heralded by a bouquet of familiar songs this week.
Before that, we paid tribute to a couple of notable bassists who died in recent weeks — Fred Smith of Television and Billy Bass Nelson of Funkadelic, as well as Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night, 5th Dimension founding member Lamonte McLemore and rapper John Forté.
Brill Building royalty Carole King and Barry Mann were turning 84 and 87 respectively, soul singer Barbara Lewis was turning 83, and Sham 69 frontman Jimmy Pursey is 71. It was also the birthday of Joe Ely, Ernest Tubb and Major Harris.
We began with a brief echo of Sunday’s Super Bowl, with a couple songs each for Seattle and New England and a Bad Bunny performance embedded in a Gorillaz song. And there was a flash of another broadcast that attracted millions 62 years ago today — The Beatles on Ed Sullivan.
