Joe Berlinger’s series of 20th century mass murders that routinely include recordings of the perpetrator, from Ted Bundy to Son of Sam, wraps up with “Conversations with a Killer: The Charles Manson Tapes” (Netflix, streaming). The voice of the madman is one of the leasser parts of the three-part series that is full of some convincing re-enactments, the voices of some of the Manson family, and most surprisingly, a couple of the teenage Manson followers who are now elderly. It gives a lot of context to the lawlessness that led up to murders, and makes a better case than the prosecutor’s insistence that Manson was obsessed with the Beatles.
