Former sitcom star and Yale grad Sara Gilbert thought up the idea of her new daytime talk show one day while sitting in the bathtub.
“I was a new mom when I thought of it. I was feeling overwhelmed. Was I giving the baby enough? Was I giving my son enough attention? And literally, I started going to this mom group, and I thought, wow, people need this kind of support, and it was just sort of like a light bulb, and I thought, what if there were a show where a bunch of women sat together and talked about the world through that perspective.”
Thus was born “The Talk,” which will take over the afternoon slot of a venerable CBS soap opera this fall.
Because it’s on TV, it’s not just regular mommies who are involved of course. They are all celebrities: Julie Chen of “The Early Show” and “Big Brother,” Leah Remini of “King of Queens,” Sharon Osbourne of “America’s Got Talent,” Holly Robinson Peete of “Celebrity Apprentice” and Marissa Jaret Winokur of “Hairspray.”
It also seems a little sexist (and frankly old fashioned) to think that it’s just women who are home weekdays, or that they are the only one who care for kids for that matter.
But says Chen, who will continue duties on “Big Brother” and “The Early Show,” “This is not a show that’s just for moms. When you tune into it, you should feel like you’re seeing six women from totally different walks of life, who are gathering and talking about what everyone is talking about, from Mel Gibson to, you know… Arizona.
“This show should feel like you’re watching six women talk about what everyone is buzzing about,” she says.
At the same time, they’ll also be talking about annoys them about their partners. Except maybe Osbourne who calls her famous rocker husband “perfect.”
“Let me tell you something. He doesn’t even know I am doing this show,” she says.
“The Talk” takes the place of “As the World Turns” on CBS starting this fall.
