Streep, Rollins, Diamond win Kennedy Center Honors

It seems as if the idea behind the Kennedy Center Awards was to have the opportunity to honor people and eulogize their figts to the arts while the honoree is still around to witness it.

But the age of honorees seems to get younger each year. Among its inductees announced this week are classical cellist Yo Yo Ma, 55 and the youthful looking Meryl Streep, 63.

Neil Diamond, 70 will be honored too, if only to allow the Lincoln Center crowd  sing a rousing refrain of Sweet Caroline.” Rounding out the group are jazz sax man Sonny Rollins and opera singer Barbara Cook.

The president and his wife will be at the event, which will be taped Dec. 4 for its traditional holiday week broadcast falling this year on Dec. 27
