As summer begins to come to an end (or at least August), so do many of its summer series.

Unfairly battered by nit-picky critics who may would prefer “Law & Order” reruns, “The Newsroom” (HBO, 10 p.m.), the topically charged drama of a cable news operation with strong writing from Aaron Sorkin (“The West Wing,” “The Social Network”) and top-rate ensemble acting, ends its first season with Will McAvoy trying to hold on to his job. A second seasion is planned.

Eric tries to save Bill from losing his humanity on the fifth season finale of the underrated “True Blood” (HBO, 9 p.m.).

In the second season finale of “Episodes” (Showtime, 10:30 p.m.) Merc finds about his wife’s affair with Matt LeBlanc and Carol gets some shocking news.

It’s not quite the end of “Breaking Bad” (AMC, 10 p.m.), but it may be for Mike and Jesse.

Another episode of Inspector Lewis on “Masterpiece Mystery” (PBS, 9 p.m., check local listings) looks into the death of a student during a drug trial.

Following last week’s double elimination, another two are nominated for eviction on “Big Brother” (CBS, 8 p.m.).

For a new edition of “Nick News with Linda Ellerbee” (Nickelodeon, 8 p.m.), kids travel to Ghana to see the effects of human trafficking.

Beauty queens from Miami practice their pageant wave on catfish on a new “Hillbilly Handfishin’” (Animal Planet, 8 p.m.).

Exhibition football includes San Francisco at Dallas (Fox, 4 p.m.) and Carolina at Jets (NBC, 8 pm.).

“The Real Housewives of New Jersey” (Bravo, 10 p.m.) complete their wine country tour.

Jane becomes an internet star on a new “Drop Dead Diva” (Lifetime, 9 p.m.), while Roxy and Trevor plan for the future on “Army Wives” (Lifetime, 10 p.m.).

It’s no Titanic, but its sinking did start a world war. Plus there are other “Dark Secrets of the Lusitania” (National Geographic, 8 p.m.) according to this two hour special.

Kelsey Grammer talks about his ex wives and probably won’t take a call from his current one during the interview on “Oprah’s Next Chapter” (OWN, 9 p.m.). Last week’s chat with Rihanna, replayed at 8, was a ratings winner for the network.

A woman is reluctant to toss her custom made clothes on a new “Hoarding: Buried Alive” (TLC, 9 p.m.).

Corcoran has a couple of things to keep an eye on during the second episode of “Copper” (BBC America, 10 p.m.).

To pay tribute to Tony Scott, who died last Sunday, there is a screening of his “Domino” (Sundance, 8 p.m.).

OK, so maybe not the most alluring title of a show tonight: “My Giant Face Tumor” (TLC, 10 p.m.).

Wonder if people are accepting Oprah’s invasion on “Lovetown, USA” (OWN, 10 p.m.).

The Little League World Series championship is between Tennessee vs. Tokyo (ABC, 3 p.m.).

Gary Cooper’s day on Turner Classic Movies includes, at prime time, “Ball of Fire” (8 p.m.), “Man of the West” (10 p.m.), “Friendly Persuasion” (midnight), “The Fountainhead” (2:30 a.m.) and “One Sunday Afternoon” (4:30 a.m.).

Animated films tonight include “Aladdin” (ABC Family, 8 and 10 p.m.), “Puss in Boots” (HBO Family, 7 p.m.) and “The Prince of Egypt” (HBO, 8:30 p.m.).

Sunday night baseball offers Braves at Giants (ESPN, 8 p.m.).

  1. It was a great idea in theory. The show started out great. I thought Hollywood and the idea of a unbiased media might come together to create a true utopia where regardless of political, religeous, sexual orientation or other biases, the news of the day would be reported with true facts regardless of affliation. Unfortunately, Newsroom fell short and quickly went the way of most media. Bashing everything conservative, stating facts that support liberal leanings only and ended up right where CNN, MSNBC, ABC, NBC….and yes, even Fox. So much for reporting the news with an objective motivation to report what America really is starving for….the unbiased truth
