What a surprise that the one person everybody wants to talk to about the Gen. Patreus situation, Paula Broadwell, has apparently been holing up in her brother’s house here in my Mt. Pleasant neighborhood in D.C.
But there are worse places, right? For a jogger such as yourself it’s very handy to the many trails at Rock Creek Park (though you shouldn’t be losing your drivers license as you did, which tipped people off that you were here).
While in Mt. Pleasant we hope you take advantage of the fine Farmers’ Market Saturday mornings, which will continue almost to Christmas. Heller’s Bakery across the street is a neighborhood landmark people still like to frequent.
Duct tape your brother’s house windows up with materials fro the Old School Hardware Store, a friendly throwback on Mt. Pleasant Street.
When it’s time for a haircut, I go to Alex’s Unisex, where they blast blockbuster movies in Spanish.
Lots of good Spanish food on the street too, with Don Jaime’s a special place for huevos rancheros.
The music at Haydee’s is kind of fun – it ranges from country to zydeco to jazz and Spanish. Did you know Mt. Pleasant used to be a country music mecca back in the 50s? Jimmy Dean used to live here, as did Charlie Waller.
Early rock was represented here as well, as Bo Diddley made his home here in the 1960s and recorded in his basement, where he also welcomed talented people in the District, including a young Marvin Gaye. Among baseball heroes, who could beat Walter Johnson who also lived here?
You may want to go out and do some Yoga, there’s a good place on the corner of Park and Mt. Pleasant.
The greatest dive bar in all of D.C. is right on the street, the Raven Grill. Just don’t ask for a fou-fou drink and never mind the jukebox, the bartender’s iPhone is blasting the best in rockabilly and old R&B as you drink your Natty Bo’s to your heart’s delight. If you like that kind of thing.
The Flying Fish is the street’s great coffee shop. Just don’t park it there for hours on end, OK? And with the number of tabloid vultures currently after you, I’m thinking probably you won’t.
