One of the most unusual couplings in film was when Katharine Hepburn starred opposite Bob Hope in the 1956 comedy “Iron Petticoat” (TCM, 8 p.m.) about a romance between a female Soviet aviator and an Air Force officer.
The mismatched marquee stars didn’t get along on the London set, Hope insisted on having his people rewrite the Ben Hecht script to get more of his gags in; Hecht petitioned to have his name taken off it.
Critics didn’t like it at the time, either. Hope bought up all the copies and it hasn’t been seen stateside for 40 years. Now it’s time to reconsider after two generations: a restored copy of the rarity shows tonight, as well as the Garbo film that inspired it, “Ninotchka” (TCM, 1:30 a.m.). In between, a couple more films with the same theme, “Silk Stockings” (TCM, 9:45 p.m.) and “Comrade X” (11:45 p.m.).
