It’s a tough sell to have a profane, inconsiderate lout be your main protagonist That’s the case with Jim Jeffries, a comedian from Australia who I wasn’t aware of, who has nothing going for him except that he has a sudden soft spot for his lawyer’s invalid brother (DJ Qualls), in advance stages of Muscular Dystrophy.
A quest to get him a sexual partner before he gets sicker is the premiere’s central venture and old have made a lowly buddy movie except that it’s a whole new series for FX.
“Legit” (FX, 10:30 p.m.) will reprise the odd trio every week in similar low quests including, in the third episode, cyber sex. For Jeffries, this is all high minded, but for most others it will be off-putting and occasionally offensive. The comedian would argue it’s inclusiveness; include me out.
The new series accompanies the fourth season start for “Archer” (FX, 10 p.m.), Adam Reed’s sharp and funny animated spy parody that tackles in the first episode the conundrum of lead voice H. Jon Benjamin, who also happens to be lead voice of “Bob’s Burgers.” The case of amnesia and advancing KGB agents is also the greatest cartoon crossover episode in a while.
Liv Tyler and Margherita Missoni are guest judges on the final challenge on “Project Runway All Stars” (Lifetime, 9 p.m.). The finale ends with a new winner.
She may not have had her daytime platform for years, but Oprah Winfrey is still something of a national moral force to whom one goes with confessions, seeking absolution. So she’s the sympathetic ear Lance Armstrong goes to as he presumably confesses to doping in his cycling career after a career of denying it. For her part, Oprah milks the appearance on “Oprah’s Next Chapter” (OWN, 9 p.m.). For many it will be an excuse to finally find the network she founded two years ago.
The Charlie Sheen comedy “Anger Management” (FX, 9 p.m.) did well enough in its initial run to trigger the rest of their unusual deal: 90 more episodes. So the first of those 90 begin tonight as the second season begins.
A new set of episodes for “Suits” (USA, 10 p.m.) with Mike taking a case that hits close to home.
Still ready for another two hours of “American Idol” (Fox, 8 p.m.)?
On one of the last few episodes “30 Rock” (NBC, 8 p.m.), Jack and Liz go to Florida to settle his mom’s estate.
“There’s also new episodes of “Parks and Recreation” (NBC, 8:30 p.m.), “The Office” (NBC, 9 p.m.) and “1600 Penn” (NBC, 9:30 p.m.).
“The Carrie Diaries” (The CW, 9 p.m.) gets another rerun after a new episode of “The Vampire Diaries” (“The CW, 8 p.m.).
The four part “Ultimate Guide to the Presidents” (History, 9 p.m.) is running it’s two hour episodes on consecutive nights, so tonight we’re all the way up to the old Wars and the Depression.
Writer, filmmaker and noir historian Eddie Muller picks his favorite of the genre: “Cry Danger” (TCM, 8 p.m.), “99 River Street” (TCM, 9:30 p.m.), “Tomorrow is Another Day” (TCM, 11 p.m.), “The Breaking Point” (TCM, 12:45 a.m.), “The Prowler” (TCM, 2:30 a.m.) and “Fingers at the Window” (TCM, 4:15 a.m.).
NBA action includes Clippers at Timberwolves (TNT, 8 p.m.) and Heat at Lakers (TNT, 10:30 p.m.).
