everest-618x400Joby Ogwyn would have been attempting his jump off of Mount Everest today in a big Discovery Channel stunt and special, except for a huge avalanche just over two  weeks ago that killed 13 sherpas, the highest one day death toll in mountain history.

Accordingly, there is a much different special, “Everest Avalanche Tragedy” (Discovery, 9 p.m.) since the network’s camera crews were already there preparing for the cancelled wing suit jump.

It’s surrounded by two other specials about the 29,000 foot mountain — “Bear Grylls: Man vs. Everest” (Discovery, 8 p.m.) and “Bear Grylls: Everast After the Avalanche” (Discovery, 10:30 p.m.).

Having already made the surprisingly successful transition to movies, Lego blocks now invades “The Simpsons” (Fox, 8 p.m.). The long-running cartoon has fiddled with its format for fun in the past — notably with its CGI excursion in a “Treehouse of Horror” episode nearly 20 years ago. This time, for the show’s 550th episode, Homer finds himself in the land of locking blocks in a nightmare about playing with Lisa. None of the characters translate particularly well to the one-time format — they’re all the same size for one thing. But they have fun as they travel back and forth between cell animation and Lego.

Lesley Stahl is busy tonight, reporting on longevity on “60 Minutes” (CBS, 7 p.m.) and covering global warming in Greenland on “Years of Living Dangerously” (Showtime, 10 p.m.).

Don is finally back in the office on “Mad Men” (AMC, 10 p.m.).

It’s the final episode for Christopher Evan Welch, the actor who plays Peter Gregory on “Silicon Valley” (HBO, 10 p.m.). He died unexpectedly during production.

One of the women trapped in a house in Cleveland tells her story on “Dateline” (NBC, 8 p.m.), because she has a book.

The race for campaign manager’s job dominates another good “Veep” (HBO, 10:30 p.m.).

Jon Snow gets a new band together on “Game of Thrones” (HBO, 9 p.m.).

“The Amazing Race” (CBS, 8 p.m.) moves to Spain.

The migration of dinosaurs and the work of ocean cartographer Marie Tharp (voiced by Amanda Seyfried) are covered on tonight’s episode of “Cosmos: A Space Odyssey” (Fox, 9 p.m.).

A Robert Wagner double feature brings “With a Song in My Heart” (TCM, 8 p.m.) and “Sparrows” (TCM, midnight).

A new standup special from the former sitcom and “SNL” star, “David Spade: My Fake Problems” (Comedy Central. 10 p.m.).

“Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” (CNN, 9 p.m.) goes to Mexico.

Kevin’s impending wedding freaks Jackie out on “Nurse Jackie” (Showtime, 9 p.m.).

Privacy is the topic on “Morgan Spurlock: Inside Man” (CNN, 10 p.m.).

Heather Graham is quite the temptation on “Californication” (Showtime, 9:30 p.m.).

Two more game 7s cap the first round of the NBA playoffs: Brooklyn at Toronto (ABC, 1 p.m.) and Dallas at San Antonio (ABC, 3:30 p.m.). Stanley Cup playoffs include Minnesota at Chicago (NBC, 3 p.m.) and Rangers at Pittsburgh (NBC Sports, 7:30 p.m.).

Baseball today includes San Francisco at Atlanta (MLB, 1:30 p.m.) and St. Louis at Cubs (ESPN, 8 p.m.).
