weathermanReality competitions have run for more than a decade seeking new singers, dancers, models, hairdressers, tattoo artists and chefs. Now here’s one seeking a new TV weather person. The candidates on the new “America’s Next Weatherman” (TBS, 11 p.m.) are apparently sincere in seeking a $100,000 prize and a chance to get on sister station CNN.

But the host Matt Oberg, last seen on “The Comedians,” is more playing an over-the-top reality host and the production from “Funny or Die” ensure a off kilter competition (in which we hope they’ll make the hopefuls stand in hurricane winds to see how they’ll withstand storm reporting). Johnny Mountain and Jillian Barberie serve as judges. And CNN’s news authority is further undermined by its participation in what might be a big joke.

On the new “Valerie’s Home Cooking” (Food Network, 3 p.m.), Valerie Bertinelli gets her own food series and invites costars from “Hot in Cleveland” to help her sample the results.

Last year’s conclusion of its Bilbo story — “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” (HBO, 8 p.m.) gets its premium cable premiere as does “Inherent Vice” (Cinemax, 10 p.m.) with Joaquin Phoenix and Josh Brolin. And Aaron Paul races in “Need for Speed” (Showtime, 9 p.m.).

More mayhem is treated at “Boston EMS” (ABC, 10 p.m.).

A Chinese labor strike turns violent on “Hell on Wheels” (AMC, 9 p.m.).

Sometimes, you just want to leave a bar. That’s the challenge for two teams on “Race to Escape” (Science, 10 p.m.).

Reruns of two recent, much-hyped media events have more in common than you would have expected — in their sledgehammer styles, brash humor and overlying scariness: “The Republican Presidential Candidates Debate” (Fox News, 8 p.m.) and “Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!” (Syfy, 8 p.m.). The latter comes with “Piranha DD” (Syfy, 10 p.m.) and “Piranaconda” (Syfy, 11:30 p.m.). And the former had a Piranaconda too, I believe.

Raymond Massey is the star today on Turner Classic Movies with “Things to Come” (6 a.m.), “The Drum” (8 a.m.), “The Scarlet Pimpernel” (9:45 a.m.), “Santa Fe Trail” (11:30 a.m.), “Seven Angry Men” (1:30 p.m.), “The Naked and the Dead” (3:15 p.m.), “Arsenic and Old Lace” (5:45 p.m.), “East of Eden” (8 p.m.), “Abe Lincoln in Illinois” (10:15 p.m.), “Desperate Journey” (12:15 a.m.), “God is My Co-Pilot” (2:15 a.m.) and “Chain Lightning” (4 a.m.).
